My thoughts go out to the women in Afghanistan who are denied basic rights and freedoms, including the freedom of expression, access to education and freedom to take part in sport.Īs we celebrate Nelson Mandela's release today, let us vow to never take our freedoms for granted. Today, as we ponder our freedoms, my heart goes out to people all over the world who are still not free. The simple act of one man’s release from prison had the impact of uniting a nation divided by decades of discrimination and provided the opportunity to embrace hope, forgiveness, peace and democracy.

The words of Martin Luther King’s speech on rang in my ears, ‘Free at Last! Free at Last!, Thank God Almighty we are Free at Last! The day had finally dawned when all South Africans could walk the road to freedom together.Īmidst the euphoria and excitement of the day, I couldn’t help thinking of the many South African's including my good friend Ashley Kriel, who had lost their lives in the pursuit of freedom. The moment Nelson Mandela walked out of prison, it felt like sixty million South Africans walked out of prison with him. I will never forget that magical sunny afternoon when I and millions of people around the world watched him walk out of prison a free man. Thirty-two years to the day, on the 11th February 1990, Nelson Mandela walked out of prison a free man after spending twenty-seven years in prison.
